Why sign your son up for scouts? Boys will have fun, make new friends, and discover new skills.

Here are 10 Things your son will learn or have reinforced as a scout.

1)    Friendly Service- Scouts provide service to their local community though conservation projects, food drives, marching in local parades and other projects. Scouts learn to willingly give back to their community.

2)    Outdoor Skills- Scouting builds upon outdoor skills as boys advance in rank. From hiking, to swimming, using a compass and map, cooking and camping, a cub scout’s out door skills and personal confidence in their abilities grow.

3)    First Aid- A scout is prepared and part of the preparation is knowing basic first aid. Scouts learn basic first aid and emergency preparedness skills.

4)    Knots- Knot tying is an important scout skill and all scouts learn how to tie six most important knots- the square knot, double half hitch, bowline (or life saving knot), clove hitch, sheet bend, and taught line as well as the usage and purpose of each knot.

5)    Safety- All cub scouts learn how to keep themselves safe and make sure their families and homes are safe from hazards. Scouting focuses on safe swimming, boating and biking too.

6)    Team Work & Camaraderie- Scouts learn to work together on projects and activities and become team members in their dens- the smallest group in scouting. Boys also work with other scouts in the pack and district at scouting events, like the Tiger Safari, Klondike Derby and Chuckwagon events at Canp Squanto in Plymouth and throughout the year.

7)    Pinewood Derby- Every year all scouts receive their Pinewood Derby car kit to design and build their own Pinewood car to race at the Derby. Boys get to work with their families on their car and race with other scouts in the den and the pack. Winners go on to race at the district and council derby. The Pinewood Derby is one of the most highly attend pack meetings every year and one of the great scouting memories boys take with them into adulthood.

8)    Citizenship- Being a good citizen is an important part of scouting. Along with community service, scouting reinforce citizenship encouraging boys to take responsibility in their community, school, the scout pack and their families.  The scouts help out the V.F.W., participate in Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parades and activities, flag replacement and retirement ceremonies.

9)    Personal Achievement- Scouting reinforces achievement. Scouts work to obtain their rank by completing the tasks in their scouts books for Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelo ranks on the path to Boy Scouts in 5th grade. Scouts also can earn academic and sports pins that acknowledge a boy’s learning and skill achievement.

10)  Self-Reliance- Scouts become more self-reliant. Scouting helps to each personal responsibility in boys and how to take care of themselves. With each of the skills that boys learn in scouting, their self confidence, knowledge and good decision making skills help a scout to recognize his own ability and self-reliance.
